Membership Update and Negotiation Survey – IBEW 2034 - Nov 2, 2023

Dear Member;

We have some exciting news to share regarding the recent developments in the MPI Strike!  The MPI members' strike has officially concluded, and the ratified offer includes some significant gains for our members. Here's a summary of the agreement:

  • 2022: 3% salary increase
  • 2023: 3% salary increase
  • 2024: 3.4% salary increase (comprising 2.9% General Wage Increase (GWI) and 0.5% Retention Adjustment)
  • 2025: 3.6% salary increase (comprising 2.8% GWI and 0.8% Retention Adjustment)
  • Members will receive 2 weeks of recognition pay, compensating them for the challenges they faced during the strike, equating to approximately 4.2% as a one-time payment.
  • 63% of our members will benefit from a 3.5% increase in additional scope over the life of the agreement. All other members who remain with MPI after 2025 will also receive this 3.5% increase.
  • In addition, members will receive a one-time signing bonus of $1,800.00

As we celebrate the success of our allies, we must also look ahead to our next challenge—the upcoming 2024 contract period. While the corporation may choose to initiate negotiations for 2024 after the arbitration process (scheduled for Jan 29-Feb 2, 2023), our Bargaining Committee believes it's imperative to apply pressure and aim to conclude the 2024 bargaining before the end of 2023. We officially notified the corporation of our intent to commence bargaining on Friday, October 13, 2023.

In light of the recent change in government, we see an opportunity to propose an agreement that could potentially supersede the arbitration process and deliver results sooner. If we can achieve this, we will present the agreement for a ratification vote, offering an alternative to arbitration.

While we have gathered numerous proposals, options, and ideas from recent surveys over the past few years, we remain open to fresh approaches that can bring clarity to the agreement, improve working conditions, and secure monetary benefits. Your input through this survey is invaluable for capturing an honest and accurate reflection of each member's priorities and expectations for our next round of negotiations. As you know, successful negotiations hinge on well-supported proposals and arguments, along with an engaged and united membership.

We recognize that Manitoba Hydro has faced significant challenges over the past seven years, including wage mandates and external interference. With the recent change in government, there is renewed optimism for the upcoming rounds of bargaining and the future of Manitoba Hydro.

When you complete the survey, please do not hesitate to share any ideas or concepts you believe are relevant to the negotiation process. Additionally, indicate the issues that are of the highest priority and importance to you, including those you believe are worth fighting for.
