Happy New Year 2022 !
Mar 15, 2022

31 December, 2021

Dear Member;

2021 will truly be a year for us all to remember!  My wish for you is that 2022 will be equally memorable for all of you, but for the right reasons.  This past year, the membership has grown stronger through its perseverance.  COVID-19 demanded a lot from everyone, and you came through with style.  In 2022 we know that greener pastures lie ahead, and I look forward to better times for all of us.  I am truly thankful for everyone’s efforts during this past year, and a special big thank-you goes out to all the families who helped and supported our members during those trying times.  Whatever challenges lie ahead, I know that your commitment and professionalism will be there when it’s needed.

As we leave 2021, I want to take some time to acknowledge the passing of some important people that we have known, and who have left an unforgettable legacy at Manitoba Hydro.  Their contribution is immeasurable, and we all owe them a debt of gratitude.

Ronald McLean (retired IBEW Business Manager) passed away on December 4, 2021, at his home in Victoria, BC at the age of 74 years.  Ron was raised by his parents Arnold and Bessie McLean, near Strathclair, Manitoba where he attended and graduated from Strathclair Community School.  After high school, Ronald continued his education at Red River Community College before starting a lifelong career with Manitoba Hydro and IBEW Local 2034. Ronald retired from his career at Manitoba Hydro and IBEW and moved to Victoria, BC.

Former President and CEO of Manitoba Hydro, Bob Brennan, with his family at his side, passed away peacefully on December 15, 2021, at the St. Boniface Hospital.  In order to cultivate a free flow of ideas, Bob had an open-door policy that encouraged employees to reach out to their managers, to the executive and to himself.  Bob could always be found at the Pancake House on payday mornings and he always took the time to greet any Hydro employees present and to listen to their concerns.

Bob became CEO during the construction of the Limestone GS which resulted in high debt.  Under Bob's guidance, (along with VP Vince Warden’s help), the Corporation was guided from a 92% debt ratio down to 80% without any layoffs or any significant residential rate increases.  During that period, the Corporation went 6 years without a rate increase as well!

Bob cared for not only all the employees, but also for all Manitobans.  He constantly wanted to ensure that Manitoba Hydro was reported upon positively in the media with whom he had a great rapport.  There are many stories of Bob stopping his car on construction sites on weekends to say hello to employees restoring power or working extra hours to get a job done on time.

It is extremely evident that these individuals had a profound impact on all who were fortunate enough to interact with them.  I have no doubt that you will continue doing their legacy proud.  Best wishes for a Happy New Year!

In solidarity,

Business Manager
