Basic and Advanced On-Line Shop Steward Training Available
Oct 07, 2020
5 October, 2020

Dear Sisters and Brothers;

Over the course of the past year, Local 2034 has taken its Shop Steward training programme and developed independent study modules that will allow members to be trained as stewards in the comfort of their own home locations and at any time convenient to themselves.

This newly formatted training takes the form of topic specific modules that consist of a video presentation, short readings in the form of handouts, and module quizzes.

Basic Shop Steward Training:

The Basic Shop Steward Training programme is comprised of eight modules as follows:

  • Module 1 - IBEW Structure
  • Module 2 - Roles of the Shop Steward
  • Module 3 - The Collective Agreement
  • Module 4 - Complaints and the Shop Steward
  • Module 5 - Grievances and Information Gathering
  • Module 6 - Shop Stewards and Member Meetings
  • Module 7 - Duty of Fair Representation
  • Module 8 - Useful Tips for Shop Stewards

In order to complete the programme, members must finish all 8 modules, beginning with module 1 and working their way sequentially through module 8.

Once a member has received approval to take the training from the Union office, they will be sent Module 1.  This will include an instruction sheet for how to complete the module, the link to the video presentation the member needs to view, and a handout on the “Organization of the IBEW”.  If a member doesn’t have internet access to view the video, she or he should contact the office and other arrangements will be made to gain access to the training.

Once a member has completed Module 1, she or he will need to contact the Union office and have the module’s quiz sent to them.  After completing test, the member will need to return it to the Union office in order to get the next module sent out to them.  This cycle will repeat itself for each of the units until the programme is completed, at which point, she or he will be deemed to have been trained as a Local 2034 Shop Steward.

The advantages of this distance education model are many.  As already stated, the training takes place at the member’s location and doesn’t require travel away from home for any period of time.  Likewise, the time schedule for the training is entirely at the discretion of the member.  This will be of immense benefit to those who have to work shift rotations or irregular hours.  Training can be done during any free time available to the member.  Similarly, the training can be done over extended periods such as weeks or months.  The Union office will limit the duration of a member’s Basic Shop Steward Training programme only if the elapsed time since earlier training likely means that the member needs “refresher” training on previously completed modules.

Advanced Shop Steward Training:

Apart from the Basic Shop Steward Training modules, Local 2034 has also developed a series of "Advanced Shop Steward" modules.  These are stand-alone modules designed to provide further professional development for Shop Stewards.  Because these modules are stand-alone, they can be taken in any order the steward wishes.  Further, as the modules are designed for professional growth, stewards can take as many or as few of them as they wish.

The Advanced Shop Steward Modules available to date are:

  • Complaint or Grievance
  • Conflict Management
  • Duty of Fair Representation
  • Group Goals
  • Influencing Others
  • Interpersonal Communication
  • Legislation Protecting Members
  • Progressive Discipline and IBEW Code Of Excellence

Unlike the modules developed for the Basic Shop Steward Training programme, these units simply provide stewards with a link to the video presentation.  Again, if a steward can’t access the video link, she or he should contact the office and other arrangements will be made to gain access to the presentations.

Although these modules were designed with Shop Stewards in mind, they provide equally valuable information for any members who want to better understand the topics being presented.  Consequently, interested members are encouraged to approach the Union office to gain access to these modules.

Members who wish to take advantage of these training opportunities should contact admin@ibew2034.com for further information.

In solidarity,

Business Manager
