BUSINESS REPRESENTATIVE
IBEW Local 2034 is seeking candidates interested in joining our dynamic leadership team in a challenging position that offers great opportunities for both personal and professional growth.
Position Description:
Working under the direction of the Business Manager/Financial Secretary, the Business Representative is responsible for leading and overseeing the affairs of the bargaining unit and advocating on behalf of members within their assigned service area. The successful candidate will be a highly motivated team player who is dedicated to the cause of social justice and willing to make the sacrifices necessary to advance/promote/protect workers' rights.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
- Administration of Union Business at all levels - including, but not limited to: interpretation/enforcement of the collective bargaining agreement and/or applicable legislation; developing and maintaining a proactive labour/management relationships;
- Provide guidance, assistance and support to Unit Officers, Stewards and members - acting in both a resource capacity (with respect to the interpretation and administration of collective agreements and/or applicable legislation) and as counsel (with respect to challenging injustice and helping others understand their roles, rights and responsibilities),
- Promote the ‘Good of the Union’ – helping to raise the awareness of our members on the importance of supporting the efforts of Local Union 2034 and our sister organizations in the labour community,
- Review collective agreements and recommend areas for improvement/ conduct research necessary to develop contract proposals,
- Prepare and present grievances - up to and including being involved in arbitration,
- Accept additional duties as assigned by the Business Manager, and
- At all times work in partnership with the staff, officers and membership to protect and advance our collective best interests; ensure that all workers are treated with dignity and respect and improve the quality of life for members and their families.
Qualifications:
A combination of relevant education and union experience with Manitoba Hydro workplace experience (heavily weighted) will be considered.
- Thorough knowledge and understanding of the IBEW CA, Manitoba Hydro Policies and labour legislation.
- Superior leadership skills with proven ability to inspire, coach, counsel, direct, and mentor, earning the trust, confidence and respect of both members and employers.
- Well-developed time management skills that allow the coordination/prioritization of multiple assignments and competing deadlines.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Advanced skills in creative problem solving, risk assessment and critical thinking.
- Ability to work and act independently – with little or no supervision.
- Recognized ability to listen and respond in a decisive, positive and proactive way to the issues and concerns of a diverse group of individuals (i.e. well developed interpersonal skills that reflect accountability, foster openness and build trust).
- Comfortable with public speaking and able to communicate to groups (both friendly and hostile) - regardless of their size.
- An understanding in negotiations (both rights and interest based) is an asset.
- Computer literate and familiar with most common software applications such as: Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
- Hold and retain a valid Manitoba driver's license.
Terms and Conditions of Employment:
- This will be a 6-month Term position with the possibility of extension.
- The work location is at the IBEW 2034 Office at 1907 Portage Ave.
- Long and irregular hours including early mornings, late evenings, weekends and occasionally, holidays are possible.
- At times, travel is possible within Manitoba and all travel expenses will be covered in accordance with Local Union Policies and By-laws and the UFCW 832 CA.
- The wage and benefits will align with Union By-laws and the UFCW 832 CA.
