President's Message
Thursday April 23, 2009I’m very pleased to have been appointed to the position of President by the Local Union’s Executive Board. I have vacated the position of Central Area Representative on the Executive Board to assume this new responsibility. Our local will no longer have a full time president working out of the IBEW Local 2034 union office. I will be continuing my full time duties with Manitoba Hydro in the Assistant District Operator I (shift) position at Fort Garry District and will be booked off for union business as required. As such, I kindly ask for patience when contacting me and requesting a response.
My primary responsibilities include enforcing the IBEW Constitution, our Local Union By-laws, assume leadership of the Executive Board and ensure all business at the Executive Board meetings are conducted in an orderly fashion. The day to day business of the local union is handled by Lauris Kleven, Business Manager and his local union staff. Accordingly requests of this nature should be made to the local union office.
Our local also has a newly elected Vice-President, Kim Gibson, who has vacated his South Western Executive Board position to assume his new responsibility. Brother Gibson lives in Brandon MB and works at the Brandon Generating Station as a Senior Technician. He will assume the duties of president in my absence.
IBEW Local 2034 Executive Board is now asking for members to submit their names for both the South Western Area and Central Area Representative positions on the Executive Board. This is an excellent opportunity for a member to get involved with their local union and I encourage anybody who might be interested to submit their name; check the Executive Board minutes for the deadlines for submitting your name.
It is a very busy time for our local as we are presently in the middle of contract negotiations with Manitoba Hydro. The expiration of our contract with Manitoba Hydro is May 27, 2009.
We need to show a strong and unified membership during our negotiations and I encourage all of you to come out and get active in your local unit meetings. We all have busy schedules however I challenge you to come out and attend at least one meeting during our negotiations so that you can communicate information back to the members in your workplace.

Friday July 25, 2008I hope everyone is enjoying the summer activities they look forward to all year, and that you find time for some well deserved rest and relaxation. Summer usually brings with it an increase in commitments with sports activities and summer vacation. Finding a balance which keeps everyone safe and having fun, however challenging it may become, is surely worth the effort.
We know that summer is often a time where our safety records at Manitoba Hydro will show an increase in accidents/incidents. I would like us all to be mindful of this sobering truth and to take this fact seriously. Be it at work or at the cottage, take the extra time needed to ensure your personal safety as well as the safety of those around you.
As you know, we are now into the final year of the collective agreement and are currently preparing to enter into negotiating a new contract. Many of you have returned the negotiation survey which was sent out with Powerline in late June. If you are still working on yours remember to get them in the mail by the deadline,
I look forward to hearing from you.
President
