EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITY

 

FULL TIME ASSISTANT BUSINESS MANAGER

 

The Assistant Business Manager is a member of a team of professional representatives working for the members of a 2700 member plus Local Union. Our members work for Manitoba Hydro, The Town of Gillam, The Town of Snow Lake, Computype and various contractors under a Transmission Line Agreement. The ABM works in an independent leadership role under the direction of the Local Union Business Manager. The ABM provides service to the Local Union membership within the framework of the IBEW constitution, the local union bylaws and policies as determined by the Local Union Executive Board. 

 

Members of IBEW Local 2034 should be aware that this employment opportunity is being posted internally and externally. This posting is open to members of all Bargaining Units at Manitoba Hydro and is being advertised nationally to the public. 

 

DUTIES

 

  • Active participation and assistance in the constitutional requirements of the Business Manager including organizing, protecting the IBEW jurisdiction, keeping accurate statistical and financial records.
  • Day-to-day administration and interpretation of the Collective Agreement(s) and related policies.
  • Dealing with employer representatives to resolve problems arising from the administration and interpretation of the Collective Agreement(s) and policies.
  • Travelling regularly about the province, as required, for member contact and unit meeting attendance.
  • Regular contact, communication and co-operation with other IBEW Local Unions and other Unions as required by the Business Manager.
  • These duties are intended to be an accurate reflection of the main duties of this position. There will be other duties and responsibilities in dealing with complex workplace issues in a province wide workplace, which will be deemed necessary and appropriate by the Local Union Business Manager. 

QUALIFICATIONS

 

  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's degree supplemented by three years of professional employee relations, industrial relations or labour relations experience, or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

  • Demonstrated ability to work independently with a minimum of direction and supervision, multi-task, have accurate attention to detail and must deliver on promises,
  • Demonstrated ability to see problems as opportunities, to manage well under pressure and have the ability to make things happen,
  • Intuitive with outstanding interpersonal influencing and communication skills to develop and motivate others,
  • Have accurate attention to detail, be an assertive complete finisher with high level of personal presence and credibility,
  • Ability to handle difficult, controversial and confrontational situations in a forthright and professional manner,
  • Ability to work harmoniously and successfully with our members and our various employers,
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing in a variety of situations including high public forums,
  • Must have and maintain a valid class 5 driver’s licence and be prepared for province wide travel by road, air and occasional other means on a regular basis including overnight and occasional longer term (one or two week assignments) stays at various out of town locations inside and occasionally outside of the province,
  • Must provide own vehicle and will receive compensation for required travel according to IBEW Local 2034 Bylaws,
  • Must be willing to participate in and take various training and studies in the fields of Industrial Relations, Human Relations and Leadership. 

Employees of Manitoba Hydro are eligible to apply for a Union Leave from Manitoba Hydro during which various cumulative benefits continue to accrue during employment by the Local Union.

 

It should be noted that the Business Manager is subject to a three-year elected term of office. The current term is July 2010 to July 2013 and the ABM is also subject to this term.
